In brief, if you are a member of the Anglican or Methodist Church – minister, student or parishioner, you are welcome to register as a library member.
Others who do not fit the above categories may be granted membership on payment of a fee.
Members are entitled to borrow books, and to access our electronic databases and full text periodicals.
Anyone is welcome to visit the library and to read material while there. Please come to the desk and sign the visitors book if you are not a library member.

The loan period is four weeks. Books may be renewed for a further four weeks via the online catalogue. After this, books must be brought back into the library for any further renewal.
- A fine is payable on all overdue items: it is suggested that you request a limited number of items at a time, so that you can use them before the return date.
- A reminder notice is sent by email just before a book comes due.
- An overdue notice is sent a week later with a $1.00 per item.
- An account for full replacement value plus a handling charge is sent for all items not returned or renewed following these notices.
Books from the following collections are for use in the library only, and are not able to be borrowed:
- New Zealand and Pacific Church Collection
- Baumber Collection
- Rare books
- Theses and dissertations
- Books on the new books display (these may be borrowed after the one week display period)
Books are placed on short loan for St John’s College Anglican Studies Programme, Trinity Methodist College courses, and the Department of Theology at the University of Otago. These books cannot be taken out of the library. Your library card is held while you use this material.
Short loan books can be borrowed on overnight and weekend loans, and may be collected 15 minutes prior to the library closing. Such items must be returned as soon as the library opens the following morning.
Library staff can assist distance users with reference enquiries by:
- Identifying relevant print and electronic resources which can be made available by post, email, or fax.
- Helping users to find relevant books on our online catalogue ANGLICAT.
Users can also conduct their own searches by:

- Searching for newspaper, magazine, and journal articles in our e-journals collection.
- Exploring our extensive collection of links on the John Kinder Theological Library web site. Visit our E-research page for further information.
- All intending postal borrowers should make a deposit of $20 with the Library, from which postage will be deducted. We do not have credit card facilities, but a direct deposit may be made to ANZ Bank account no. 010236 0041474 00
- Please make cheques payable to Kinder Library. If paying by direct credit please reference with your name and the words postal deposit.
- To register with the Library, please fill out a registration form and return it, together with your deposit.
- Books are issued for a four week period, and may be renewed once via Anglicat. A fine for overdues will be deducted from your deposit, at the rate of $1 per item for the first overdue notice and $2.50 per item for the second notice.
- Some required reading for courses is held on desk copy in the Library and is not available for borrowing.
- Books returned to the Library by post must be securely wrapped in cardboard or in a handibag and addressed to:

NOTE: you will be sent reminder emails when your books are overdue. Always ensure the library has your up-to-date email address. If recall notices or overdue reminders are being sent to an out-of-date email address, borrowers will still be liable for the fines incurred. If you are not receiving overdue notices via your email please check with us and your internet provider.
Articles from periodicals and small sections of a book can be photocopied or scanned for you at 10 cents per page. If the article is available via one of the Library’s online e-journal collections, you will be directed to that source rather than the library sending a photocopy.

If you are a registered library member, and require books and articles not held by this library, please ask library staff if it can be obtained from another library or provider. Please note that charges may be incurred for this service.
1. Head to Anglicat
2. Log in using your library card number (found on the back of your card) and password (last 4 digits of your card number) – note it is a zero not an oh.
3. Search for the book in the search bar.
4. Once you’ve found it, click into the record. On the right hand side in a grey box there is the option to ‘place reserve’
5. Once you’ve placed a reserve, a notification is send to us at the library. We will email you to let you know when it’s ready to be picked up.
Note: If you’d like to make a pile of reserves at the same time, you can ‘Add to your cart’ each time you find a book. Make sure you go to your cart (top right on the grey bar) and select ‘Place reserves’ before you log out. If you do not do this, we do not get a notification that you would like the selected books.
